Above & Beyond or Basic Human Decency?

We expect and accept so little from each other.

Early last week, a nasty winter storm caused a massive traffic nightmare along the I-95 corridor in Virginia. It stranded hundreds of motorists, some for upwards of 24 hours.

People were stuck in their cars, overnight, in 20-degree temperatures. Social media blew up with pleas for help, food, anything. The governor has been criticized for his response — or lack thereof — to which he replied,

“We all need to be clear that this was an incredibly unusual event.”

Not So Unusual

If you think these "unusual events" are going to stay that way, you're wrong.

Climate change is a thing. You can deny it, ignore it, or laugh at it all you want. Just because you don't acknowledge something doesn’t make it any less true.

Fires, torrential downpours, blizzards, drought — nearly everyone I know has recently gone through or is currently experiencing something that feels like an "unusual event," either directly weather-related or caused by a symptom of extreme weather patterns and changes.

The world is getting hotter, colder, more complicated, and more dangerous to live in. Especially if you are an average or below average citizen. These events are becoming more…
