This has been the game for a long time. Look back far enough and you see that once upon a time, Democrats were the "conservatives" and Republicans were the "liberals".
In my own personal experience, money, greed, and power OVER people is what drives most politicians - not a single one is truly interested in using their abundant resources to help people they believe are "below" them.
